- Townhouse Fire, August18, 2002. Newport Court, Woodbridge. -

The Call Came In As A Structure Fire At the Heather Village Condomineums On Newport Court, off of Howell Avenue In Woodebridge. There were initial reports of persons trapped in the house. Arriving Units Saw Smoke from Main Street.
Smoke And Flames Were Showing. Because the buildings were not Built with concrete or Drywall Firewalls between units, the Fire Spread quickly to the Attic and Spread throughout the Structure. The fire started By Children Playing with Matches. Two Ladder trucks were put in use, covering the Front and Rear, along with several handlines.
At first, there was little manpower (most likely due to a weekend.) The Hot, Humid 90+ degree weather made fighting the fire much harder. Several firefighters were overcome with heat exhaustion. 2 career firefighters were transported to JFK Hospital in Edison for treatment. Interior units had to be evacuated from the structure because of the roof collapsing. The Call came in at 4:45 p.m. Command was not terminated until 8:30 p.m.

The Building was Completely Destroyed, leaving 16 Homeless.
